DescriptionUnglazed, Sueki waterLabel TextSue, or sueki, ware has Korean roots; it was introduced into Japan since the 400s and 500s during the Kofun period and was the progenitor of early unglazed or naturally ash-glazed, high-fired Japanese ceramics. Sue ware was the first pottery type in Japan formed on a potter’s wheel, and was fired in early anagama kilns made by digging holes into sloped ground. During firing, the thin-walled clay body turned into a bluish gray and acquired a natural green or olive-brown ash glaze, as seen here. Sue ware was produced in numerous locations around Japan for utilitarian use until the 1100s.ProvenanceCharles B. Cohn
