Label Text2000-02-08: Edouard-Denis Baldus French, 1813-1882 Lyon, 1850s Salt print Stoddard Acquisition Fund, 1987.100 Like many artists before him, Baldus began his career as a painter, exhibiting in the salons of 1842, 1848 and 1851. By 1849 he was a practicing photographer, and received his first commissions in 1852, to survey historical monuments and record the reunion of the Tuileries and the Louvre. In 1855 he was commissioned to photograph the railroad route from Paris to Boulogne, and he received critical acclaim for a set of landscape photographs that had been exhibited. One of the main strengths of his work is composition, which is evidenced in this photograph. A master of choosing the perfect point of view, Baldus rarely photographed anything frontally.
