Label TextIn 1904, when Sander opened his first photography studio, he had already begun collecting character studies of local farmers. Building upon these images, he compiled a visual survey of the German people which included portraits of the artists of Cologne.
Initially active in the Cologne Dada scene, when he returned from World War II, Hoerle (1895–1936) shifted his style to one influenced by Russian Constructivism. Hoerle favored figures represented in profile or in strict frontal poses. Sander captures Hoerle’s artistic style in this image of him sketching Hein Domgörgen, the German boxing middleweight champion of 1921.
