Label TextPaul Gavarni, nom de plume for Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier, is second perhaps only to Honoré Daumier as the greatest French visual satirist of the nineteenth century. Masked events known as carnivals were popular during the mid-nineteenth century. Gavarni was a regular at these parties, often designing costumes for the guests. In this print he satirizes a group of wealthy, predatory men popularly dubbed “lions.” Lions would slip into a clandestine area during the carnival to engage in covert trysts with their mistresses or prostitutes.
