Label TextLawrence was a child prodigy and was largely self-taught. He became King's Painter in 1792 and was knighted in 1815. His most important commission came in 1818, when he was assigned to paint the portraits of the Allied European statesmen and commanders who had joined to defeat Napoleon.
This double portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Dunlop was probably painted about 1825. James Dunlop (1782–1844) was a tobacco merchant and insurance broker of Scottish descent. He married Nancy Gilliam Duncan, an American, and they made their home in London.Provenanceby 1888, James Dunlop of Tollcross (nephew to sitters); by descent to an unknown female relative; Willed to Girton College, dates unknown; returned to family, dates unknown; then to Mr. Main, dates unknown; Sold to Mr. Gair of Glasgow, dates unknown; by 1942 Mr. Gair sold to Mr. Fred C.
