Label TextThe role of the nanny as both caretaker and wet nurse had mostly disappeared in Europe by the end of the eighteenth century. However, as late as 1869, nearly half of French newborns were still administered to by a wet nurse. The wealthiest families had live-in nannies while middle-class parents sometimes sent their children to live with other families for up to two years. In this work, Abel-Truchet focuses on children at play in the foreground while on the right side a coterie of nannies, recognizable by their fringed caps, attend to a swaddled child.ProvenanceBarbara Kaplan, 4400 Route 9 South- Suite 1000, Freehold, New Jersey 07728
