Label TextLuca Giordano was one in a series of great artists to work in Naples in the seventeenth century. He traveled widely, working in Rome, Florence and, in the unique case of this paining, Venice. He worked with virtuosity, showing a bold use of color and a dramatic feeling for composition. This painting is a sketch for a large composition now in the Academia in Venice, which Giordano executed in the early 1650s while on a short stay in Venice. The Museum also owns a much later painting by Giordano entitled Galatea, with Acis as a River God. It was painted between 1675 and 1677 and shows the painter working in a much lighter and more fluid manner.ProvenanceDr. Arch. Benedetto de Scarpis, Venice Italy
