Label TextThe meaning and look of Richard Billingham’s photographs, which teem with emotional chaos and physical squalor, are intimately bound up in both his closeness to his subject – his family – and the distance from which he looks at it. In 1990, as an art student and living at home, he started using the camera to get reference material for his paintings. Billingham said his father, Ray, who is pictured here, is “a chronic alcoholic and has drunk for as long as I can remember. He has not worked since he was made redundant from his job as a machinist around 1980.” Billingham said he has been taking pictures of his family “as an attempt to comprehend myself and them more fully.”ProvenanceLuhring Augustine Gallery, West 24th St., New York, NY 10011
