DescriptionThe lid fits imperfectly, but the crack in the hinge, imperfect fit, and notches from the original fit suggest that it was originally well fitted, but broke at the hinge and was repaired, impairing the original alignment. Enamel applied in turquoise, red, blue and white. Some of the red enamel may be replaced; portions of the red are lost. Gilding originally on the bottom as well. The gilding has been embellished with tooling. The walls are made from sheet copper; seamed under the hinge. The base is mechanically attached with 4 rivets. Similar attachments can be seen on the fittings.Label TextChampleve enameling adds color to the graceful vine scrollwork on this pyx. Unused, consecrated host were kept in such a container until they could be served at the next Mass.ProvenanceJoseph Brummer
