DescriptionOvoid form, glaze of pale lavender. Mark underneath foot, "Ta Ch'ing Yung-ch'eng nien chih". Made in the reign of Yung-Ch'ng of the great Ch'ing (dynasty). Formerly in the Morgan Porcelain Collection. (I. 13/32/ y56).Label TextImperial monochrome porcelain vases with pale blue-green glazes, derived from the classic celadon glazes (cf. 1996.98), were produced at Jingdezhen during the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong reigns. The flawless dongqing (“winter green”) celadon glazes of these two vases help focus attention on their decorative details and classic forms. The large, four-lobed vase is embellished with archaistic phoenix design handles. The heads of the birds are complete with bills, combs, and whirls on the bodies to indicate feathers. The small vessel is shaped like a meiping (“plum vase”), a type of vase used to hold plum blossoms.ProvenanceDuveen Brothers, New York
