Label TextJapanese Crane, Pine Tree and Rising Sun Artist: Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) Date: Mid 1830s Bird: Japanese Crane, Grus japonensis Muller Signed: Ichiryusai Artist's seal: Ichiryusai Woodblock print; ink and color on paper; kakemono-e John Chandler Bancroft Collection, 1901.1128 Hiroshige produced a small number of "bird-and-flower" kakemono-e, inexpensive vertical two-sheet prints that could be mounted like hanging scroll paintings in the family alcove (tokonoma). This design of a majestic Japanese crane, or tancho, balancing on one leg, silhouetted against a rising, red sun, would have been displayed at New Year's. While the pine symbolizes winter and perseverance, the tancho, symbolizes a long, prosperous and peaceful life.
