Label TextAs a student in the Romanist workshops of Jan Gossaert and Frans Floris, Lombard became oriented to the Italian Renaissance. In 1532 he became court artist, painter, architect, and theorist to Erard de la Marck, Prince-Bishop of Liège. He joined the prelate’s Roman envoy in 1537, to buy art for the Liège palace. Lombard made hundreds of sketches like this in Rome, combining images and iconography from ancient ruins with a more up-to-date figure style. Later, when he began an academy in Liège, he used these drawings to teach students.ProvenanceLeonard Baskin; purchased from Hill-Stone Inc., New York, NYOn View
