Label TextLombard established an Italian-style academy in Liège, according to his biographer Dominique Lamspon. He taught drawing and painting, and began a printshop, where works after his designs and those of his students could be engraved and sold. Collaert’s prints after Lombard are true to his designs, and also reflect the influence of Raphael’s engraver, Marcantonio Raimondi. This event from Exodus depicts the Israelites in the Caanite wilderness, suffering from thirst. Bidding them to trust God, Moses touched his staff to a rock, where a lifesaving spring flowed forth.ProvenanceJames Bergquist, Boston, MA
