Label TextThis jar once had a lid for wine storage. Only a third of the original body of the vessel remains. The museum conservator restored a large part of the missing body with plaster and added a matching handle. The fill was painted black and the top edge of the restoration was purposefully shaped to appear like the original break line. Conservators do not invent, rather they respect the intent of the artist in their treatments. In this case, the shoulder and neck of the jar are not restored because the original shape is not known.ProvenanceDr. Jacob Hirsch, New York; sold to the Worcester Art Museum, 1953.
