Label TextThis is one of a series of photographs made for Art News magazine at a time when Pollock’s (1912-1956) drip paintings revolutionized American art. Burckhardt visited the artist’s studio in East Hampton, Long Island.
Pollock painted alone in a small barn behind his house. He spread loose canvases on the floor, and stood over them to ladle splatters of paint over the canvas. He opened himself to subconscious inspiration, the resulting lyrical paintings document his balletic movements and split-second reactions.
