Label TextOne of the most distinctive French artists of the early twentieth century, Georges Rouault (1871–1958) was renowned for simple, accessible compositions that carry profound emotions. As a teenager he was an apprentice in a stained glass studio, then studied with the Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. A devout Catholic, Rouault associated with a church that advocated a return to Medieval orthodoxy. He developed a painting style that combined the emotion of Expressionism with the simplicity of Gothic sculpture, and the bright colors of stained glass. Rogi André, née Rosza Klein, was briefly married to the better-known photographer André Kertész. Kertész attempted to purge this relationship from any narrative regarding his personal life. Art historian David Travis once confronted Kertész about André to which he replied, “I think she was a photographer in Paris.” ProvenanceMr. and Mrs. Milton P. Higgins, Worcester, MA
