DescriptionFlattened baluster-shape vase with handles gilded. White porcelain with scenes in reserves on two sides. Lip broken. A pair with no. 1939.84. 7/18/51 J. Plumer: This pair of vases of no interest whatever, rated E.Label TextIn the latter part of the Qianlong period, it became fashionable to embellish the entire surface of a porcelain body with enamel decoration, leaving little or no white ground showing. This vase is a good example of the growing trend for all-over design. On one side the master of a mansion is shown returning in a rickshaw, greeted by ladies and children on a veranda. On the other side he is depicted seated at a table, watching a servant pound rice in an interior courtyard. The lady of the mansion is depicted twice. On one side (seen here on the neck) she stands next to her older son who holds a fan; on the other side she is shown accompanied by her younger son. In the late 18th and 19th centuries, vases like this one were widely exported to the West.ProvenanceDr. Samuel B. Woodward, Worcester, MA
