DescriptionPlate No. 10 from the series "Academia" or "The Instruction of Noble Persons".Label TextIn most of Europe, jousting declined after the mid-1500s, but it lasted longer in Germany than elsewhere. In this print, a young page assists a gentleman preparing to joust. In the background, aristocratic horsemen demonstrate their skills, aiming spears and pistols at exotically dressed targets. The poem at the bottom reads: Tourneying Here physical skill will be demonstrated in an open arena. This structured combat can be considered a sharp test of the nobility, when in fencing, shooting and jousting they display their gallantry. The knightly blood of heroes, at the ringing sound of trumpets, urges the heated courage of noblemen to win the best prize, and teaches, when things are in earnest, what bravery they should perform.
