Label TextThis painting’s inspiration comes from the small village of Barbizon, thirty miles south of Paris. The artists that gathered there differed in age, technique, and training, but all shared a passion for landscape painting. Corot, whose work foreshadows the plein-air innovations of Impressionism, was particularly skilled at creating scenes that suggested rather than delineated the subjects, leaving room for the viewer to respond with imagination. Here he conveys the beneficence of nature in a scene that exemplifies the contented companionship of human beings and the countryside. By the time this painting was created, Corot had developed a soft brushwork technique and his palette was composed of delicate greens, grays, and blues which tonally evoke a tranquil mood.ProvenanceM.
