Label TextAlthough neither the subject nor the author of this portrait has been positively identified, the formality of the image and the elegance of the lady's costume link the painting to the circle of the royal court in Madrid. The style of the costume serves to date the work at around 1630, but the only clue to the young woman's identity is the initials on her pendant, apparently LVSS. Several artists have been suggested as the author of the portrait, including the court painters Bartolomé González and Roderigo de Villandrando, but as yet no definite conclusion has been reached.ProvenanceRita Lydig Sale, Blakeslee Gallery, New York NY
