Label TextThese two works reside at the intersection of art and science. As the United Satates expanded into territories previously unknown to Anglo-Europeans, there was a growing demand for information about Norht American flora and fauna. Artists played a vital role in documenting the natural world with highly artistic, detailed images such as these—especially before early photographic processes invented in teh 1830s could be used for widespread reproduction.

Dougal was a Washington, D.C-based engraver who made illustrations for scientific publications and government reports about western expeditions. Clonney began his career as a lithographer, then turned to painting genre scenes of everyday life.
