Label TextMore than any other subject in Matsubara's oeuvre, the tree expresses her innermost feelings. It has been a recurring subject in her work since the early 1960s. A pine that grew outside a hall window in her childhood home inspired this highly individualized tree, which seems to press against the edges of the paper. Matsubara began making this print by carving directly in the soft pine block, was unhappy with it, turned the block around, filled it in with plastic wood and began to play with texture.ProvenanceNaoko Matsubara, Ontario, CanadaOn View
