DescriptionDark crimson with blush glaze. Incised mark on bottom: "Dedham Pottery, H R"Label TextThe Arts and Crafts movement, which flourished
in America from about 1875 to 1920, embraced
high-quality, handcrafted decorative objects as a
response to rapid industrialization and
mass-production. Hugh Robertson (1845–1908), a
key figure in art pottery, came from a long line of
ceramicists. His father, a Scottish immigrant,
started Chelsea Keramic Art Works in Chelsea,
Massachusetts, in 1872. Hugh worked there and
later continued the family business in a new
location as Dedham Pottery Company. He was
particularly renowned for his unique glazes in rich
colors and textures—as seen in these two
examples.
