Label TextThe son and grandson of Amsterdam artists, Cornelis painted portraits, and produced woodcut maps, allegorical and satirical prints. This is based on a panel painting by Coecke so popular in its time that forty-five versions—done in the painter’s Brussels shop from 1527 to 1550—are known today. The composition reflects compositional methods and figure style that Coecke learned in Italy. He also adapted ideas from images of the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael. Cornelis, an Italophile in his own right, added his own specific classicizing details.ProvenancePurchased from Lutz Riester, Freiburg, GERMANY
