Label TextOfficials and the wealthy travelled on horseback accompanied by a porter, like the figure on the bridge shown here, while commoners usually walked. With few bridges and many rivers to cross, going on foot was practical, and straw sandals were the most common item for sale on the road. This depiction of the Monkey Bridge in moonlight was completed about a decade earlier than its complement in the “Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces” series.
