Label TextLa Farge exhibited his watercolors for the first time in 1876 at the American Watercolor Society, later gaining a following both for his watercolors and stained glass commissions. Unlike many of the other watercolorists, La Farge favored a thick, precise application of opaque watercolor, likely painted over an extended period of time to allow for layered applications of color. Influenced in part by his travels to Japan, he embraced a flat, decorative approach to flora. One critic observed, "His flowers have no botanical truth but are burning with love and beauty."ProvenanceMildred RothwellOn View
