DescriptionProbably from Taranto, Southern Italy, Hellenistic period; lion in profile, one forepaw raised, tail curling between legs, face turned to look out; hole in shoulder and loop in tail for nail; gilt surface, green paint on hummock below his paws.
ProvenanceMuseum purchase from Luigi Cigliano, Rome, Italy. Originally in collection of Pellegrino Rocca, Corso Umberto III, Taranto, who inherited it from his father; in 1933 it passed into the collection of Luigi Cigliano.
