Label TextLawrence McCoy lived and operated a wholesale lumber business in Worcester, before he pursued painting full-time in Vermont. From his Main Street office, McCoy captured the city’s industrial setting, with triple-decker homes and factories arranged in its distinctive hilly landscape. Although mostly unidentified, these buildings once populated the heart of Worcester’s “golden triangle” extending from Summer to Main Streets. Atop the hill lies Worcester State Hospital (left above center) and St. Anne’s Church (right), both no longer extant. The factory billboard (“Geo. F. Blake Inc.”) designates George F. Blake, Jr. & Co., a Worcester-based steel and iron company founded in 1891, at the junction of Bridge, Mechanic, and Foster Streets. With these landmarks, Across the Rooftops depicts everyday urban life in Worcester.ProvenanceMrs. J. Herbert Johnson, Worcester MA
