Label TextDuring much of the 1850s, Kensett made regular sketching trips to the Adirondacks and the White Mountains. Returning to his New York studio, Kensett painted monumental scenes of the wilderness landscapes he had traversed. In this composed view of the Conway Valley, Kensett emphasized the opposing forces of nature and civilization: a storm gathers in the mountains in the foreground, while a shaft of light glints on the buildings of a town in the distance.ProvenanceJames Graham & Sons, Inc., New York NYOn View
