Label TextIn the decades following World War I, many American artists rejected the influence of European
modernism by embracing a realist style and
subjects from rural or everyday life in the United
States. Born into a prominent Missouri political
family, Benton became one of the leading figures of
this movement known as American Regionalism or
American Scene painting.
This harvest scene evokes the seasonal rhythms of
farming through the echoing curves of hills and
clouds and the repeating pattern of grain stacks.
The two workers diligently performing their labors
add to this idyllic vision of America’s Midwest.

Alexander Riley commissioned Corn and Winter
Wheat from Benton.ProvenanceChapin and Mary Alexander Riley Collection, Worcester, MA
