Label TextIn 1838 the Parisian businessman Aristide Boucicaut opened a small shop called Bon Marché. Within two decades it grew into the world’s first major department store. Offering fixed prices and the first “money-back guarantee,” a substantial segment of Boucicaut’s customers reflected a new and influential consumer, middle-class women. La Mode Illustrée, an early fashion magazine, featured at least one hand-colored fashion plate in each issue. Showcasing ready-to-wear attire available at stores like Bon Marché, these prints were among some of the first mainstream image-based advertising directed at women.
