DescriptionFavrile glass with vine pattern.Label TextTiffany was a fellow innovator and sometime rival to John La Farge in the development of American Art glass. He ran a large studio in New York City, employing skilled glassblowers and other artisans. In 1894, following years of experimentation and growing acclaim, Tiffany trademarked Favrile glass, named after the Old English term "fabrile," meaning hand-wrought. This new type of glass was made by manipulating colors and finishes during the glassblowing process to achieve a range of colors, texture, and effects seen in these examples. Tiffany described the iridescent sheen of much Favrile glass as:"...like the wings of certain American butterflies, the necks of pigeons and peacocks, the wing covers of various beetles."
The studio also produced stained-glass windows and mosaics with these innovative techniques.ProvenancePeter S. Morgan, Leicester, MA
