Label TextIn the late 1930s Newman helped formulate the conceptual foundation of Abstract Expressionism. Fifteen years later a new painting style made him a pioneer of Minimalism. He did large canvases of solid, unmodulated color accented lengthwise by a gestural "zip" in a contrasting hue. This print embodies the same contrast on a small scale. The juxtaposition of rough and smooth, action and rest, gestural and minimal, existence and oblivion symbolize the duality of the universe.ProvenanceHarold Rosenberg, NY; Susan Sheehan Gallery, 41 East 57th St., New York, NY 10022On View
