Label TextAlthough Ryder followed a typical training regimen for late-19th century American artists—including study at the National Academy of Design and travel in Europe—he developed a highly personalized and widely acclaimed artistic vision. Drawing on Greek mythology, this painting depicts the hero Bellerophon riding the winged horse Pegasus to Mount Helicon, where they are greeted by several of the nine Muses—goddesses who inspire the arts and sciences. Ryder's soft colors, hazy atmosphere, and loosely modeled figured enhance the otherworldliness of the scene. His practice of layering glazes and reworking paintings led, over time, to the dark cracking seen here.ProvenanceWilliam Macbeth, at Alex Morton Sale, New York NY
