Label TextThe rhythmic motions and powerful line of Indonesian Dancers demonstrates Matsubara's masterful technique. Her use of a v-shaped chisel to create a rough swift impression energizes the image. Naoko Matsubara was born in 1937 in Shikoku, Japan, and spent her early life in Kyoto. In 1961, after graduating from art school, she came to the United States to continue her studies in graphic art. While in Kyoto, she learned to cut directly into the block from her teacher Lizzi Ueno Rix, a former pupil of Joseph Hoffman. This method had been adopted by the Japanese sosaku hanga (creative print) artists at the beginning of the twentieth century. Matsubara's work is inspired by such sosaku hanga artists as Hiratsuka Unichi and Munakata Shiko, Japanese modern print artists who worked primarily in black and white.ProvenanceNaoko MatsubaraOn View
