A talented draughtsman, Bracquemond was spotted by Jean Auguste Ingres’ former pupil Joseph Guichard, who took the young boy on as a student. A pioneer in the French revival of printmaking, Bracquemond taught himself etching by reading the encyclopedia and later taught the technique to preeminent members of the Barbizon and Impressionist movements.
