Label TextDefendente was a native of Chivasso in the Piedmont region. A number of authenticated works by him survive. In this picture the saint holds a lamb, which symbolizes Christ the Redeemer being halloed and showing the marks of the Crown of thorns and the wound of the Passion. Saint John points to the lamb and to the scroll, which translates "Behold the Lamb of God." The panel probably served as the left wing of an altarpiece.ProvenancePhilip J. Gentner, Florence Italy
