Label TextJohnson was one of the most prolific chroniclers of nineteenth-century American life. Painted at the height of the artist’s career, October captures the sentimentality admired in the post-Civil War era. He draws an analogy between the elderly man and the autumn season, while demonstrating the range of his painterly abilities—from the broadly brushed hayfield and hollyhocks to the carefully rendered figure.
