Label TextCotes began as a portraitist in pastels after studying with Knapton. By the 1760s he turned to oils, adopting the fashionable style of Reynolds. He was extremely successful and became a founding member of the Royal Academy.
This portrait is signed and dated 1768. The sitter, who was then thirty, succeeded his uncle the following year as Baron Craven of Hamstead Marshall. He was an avid foxhunter and is shown here in riding attire. The formula of showing a sitter seated, three-quarter length in a landscape setting, was an extremely popular one and became influential in American painting through engraving.ProvenanceThrough descent of sitter's family, Mr. and Mrs. Chester D.
