Label TextSargent spent the majority of his life in Europe, making only periodic visits to the United States. Under the tutelage of Parisian artist Carolus-Duran, Sargent developed an affinity for the radical Impressionist palette and brushstroke. This drawing is a copy of Edgar Degas’ 1878 pastel L’étoile. Sargent mimics the skewed perspective championed by the misanthropic Degas. Though Degas possessed at least one Sargent portrait in his personal collection, he derided his young admirer calling Sargent le chef de rayon de la peinture, or “the department store manager of painting.”ProvenanceMrs. Francis Ormond and Miss Emily Sargent, London, England
