Label TextThis affectionate likeness of the artist's eldest son was painted more than twenty years after Savage's portrait of his family, which is also in the Worcester Art Museum's collection. The difference between these two paintings dramatically illustrates Savage's development from a young, self-taught artist to a confident professional, skilled in composition and the manipulation of light and color. Drawing and proportions are more capably handled, and the artist is sensitive to the mood in this informal, intimate portrait. Young Edward was born in Boston in 1795 and died in Springfield in 1858.ProvenanceRoss H. Maynard, Middlebury VT
