The travelers are provincial merchants going to Edo and a woman going to pray at Daishi Temple (Heigenji). For those coming to Edo, this ferry crossing signified the end of their journey. Edoites, however, thought they were entering a "foreign land" at the Rokug ferry in Kawasaki.
