One of the most popular gods in India, the monkey hero-god Hanuman is believed to have superhuman powers. As is evident from this icon he is usually depicted with the head of a monkey and the body of a man. Hanuman has the ability to change shape at will and protects towns and villages as well as acrobats and wrestlers. He is especially admired for his courage, loyalty and knowledge of grammar and the sciences. In the Ramayana, Hanuman served as military leader for Sugriva, the King of the vanaras ('monkeys' or 'forest dwellers').
