DescriptionStirrup-spout vessel. Light ware, with painted figures of warriors. No marks.
Label TextMoche warriors can be identified by their outfit: a conical hat topped with a crescent, a decorated tunic, and a backflap (a crescent-shaped metallic element on their back). They carry a mace (club), a shield, and spears in their hands. In this procession, the artist depicted the warriors in motion, as if running around the bottle—maybe towards battle. Similar warrior figures made of metal are on display in this gallery.ProvenanceRaymond Henniker-Heaton, London. (Purchase from Sotheby & Co., London, 30/5/27. No.s/4553).
