Black carved wood frame.; Ch'ien Lung periodLabel TextAccording to Huang Yi's inscription on a painting in a Japanese collection, these paintings, leaves from a dispersed album, were inspired by an album by Ding Yungpeng (1584-1638) in the baimiao (outline only) technique. The quiet mood and sparse compositions in these album leaves derive also, from the style of Ni Tzan, the great Yuan dynasty (c. 1280-1368) landscape painter. AS part of the Orthodox school of Chinese painting, Huang Yi followed the theories of the Ming dynasty (1368-c.1644) painter Dong Qiching, and sought inspiration from the past, especially the four great masters of the Yuan dynasty. Both the simplified treatment of the rocks and trees and motifs such as the solitary scholar looking at water from the edge of a cliff, derive from Yuan dynasty painting.
