Label TextNew Yorker James Lenox was one of the first Americans to collect Turner’s work. When he opened his collection to the public in 1877, one critic tartly dismissed the “queer, incomprehensible style” of the artist’s oil paintings. The only Turner to win his approbation was this crisp engraving after the artist’s Fighting Téméraire.ProvenanceTheodore T. Ellis, Worcester, MAOn View
