Label TextWhen Kline began to exhibit his large canvases with bold slashes of black paint on fields of white, he suddenly became one of the best-known artists in America. The artist created hundreds of sketches, but they did not relate directly to his paintings. His drawings were like a jazz musician's scales, practiced to hone technique in preparation for momentary improvisation. Kline’s sketches were so quick, spontaneous, and incidental that he used old telephone books as sketch pads.ProvenanceMrs. Helen Sagoff Slosberg, Boston, MA
