Label TextGerrit Willemsz Heda was the most important follower and probably the son of the better-known still-life painter Willem Claesz Heda of Haarlem. Until 1945, this painting was attributed to the older painter on the basis of the signature, which resembles his rather than Gerrit's, but tests have shown the signature to have been strengthened and perhaps altered in recent times. Stylistically, the painting can be firmly attributed to the younger artist, and the traditional date of 1644 seems acceptable.
Characteristic of Gerrit Heda is the upright format, the silver tonality relieved by accents of warm brown, and the attention in the textures of the various objects.ProvenanceArthur Kay Collection, Edinburgh, by 1907 until at least 1925; sold by Douwes (art dealer), Amsterdam, 1929; Mrs. A.
