Label TextThe origins of the auricular style lie in the graphic designs of Netherlandish Mannerists. Exaggerating forms found in Italian prints by Enea Vico, they transformed the shape of the human ear, and the lobes and ridges of seashells into water, cloud, and drapery design. The style reached a pinnacle in the work of Utrecht silversmiths Paulus and Adam van Vianen in the courts of Munich and Prague. This ornament print was intended as a metalsmiths’ model. Mousyn favored simple hatching with swelling lines appropriate to the complex shapes of repousée metalwork.ProvenanceWilliam Grimm Fund
