Label TextThis ivory fan could be viewed in comparison to the fan with fan 1957.62. Although the ivory sticks of this fan were not carved into threads, the all over piercing in shapes of tiny stars, circles and squares creates a similar visual effect of lace. In fact, the patterns such as the flowers and the wavy band above the medallions closely resemble 19th century European lace patterns. While the fan 1957.62 contains Chinese decorative motif such as pavilions and pagodas, this fan utilizes mostly European patterns. As the coat of arms is left blank in the fan 1957.62, this is a good example of a completed design on the coat of arms. Two letters, Y and M are marked here to demonstrate the initials of the fan owner’s name.
